Preferred scope

What is your preferred scope on your muzzleloader and why is it your preferred scope?

Well this isnt what Most prefer but i really like low powered Euro styled scopes . Specifically for lets say a shorter range by smokeless standards maybe 400 to 500 yds max range HUNTING scope i like a 1.5x6x42 or 44mm with a 30mm tube . Most have a 65’fov @100 or more up to 84′ fov @100yds . The low light preformance is just Awesome . Closest thing to night vision a guy can have in my experiance . I like a lit reticle also . At 400yds the difficulty factor is the same as a std rifle sight at 75yds . Same sight picture for both . Im not a guy that wants to cipher which 2 hairs i want to put my bullet between At All . By the same token excellant accuracy is still very much doable for clean game harvests even out there . I sometimes stalk so the close quick target acquisition i find vital for success on a animal thats making tracks . Im a bird hunter all my life so this isnt hard for me to do for deer as well  on the move . A scope as ive described really shines for this !!! Im in Michigan so woods plus open areas coverage is the norm for me . Farmland too as well as powerline coverages . I try to put myself when sitting in spots that offer both near and further oportunities if possible .  The scopes tend to be only around 20 oz so weight isnt bad for a field gun of a max of 10 lbs preferably  under .  Hawke has a nice inexpensive model in their Wide Angle 30mm series  thats 1.5x6x44 for around $400ish last i looked .  Its fairly tough and holds zero too . I like it as its basic .

Ive taken note of a couple of German Precision Optics offering i really like that have the fabulous wide FOV at lower power but have more magnification on the upper end for further shots . One is a 2×12 x 44 x 30mm and the other is a 1.5x9x44x30mm . Both look fabulous as great all around scopes close , far and inbetween for the serious hunter that hunts many various scenarios and looks to do it all effectively . Lighted And Dialable too . Thats my take on my prefered type of scope for this type of higher preforance rifle .

I have a nice 45 thats heavy to carry about but is a nice stationary tower blind or just the regular outhouse type blind as i call them lol .

It wears a 4x16x40 Vortex Diamondback with bdc and works well for that type of hunting or target use for me .

I dont have the wallet as some do for Nightforce or other really fancy scopes anyway . Plus honestly beyond 500 or 600 yds im really not interested in shooting further at anything  – paper , steel , and definately not live game .  Thats not for me .

If you dont shoot big boomer super high velocity loads you dont need those big dollar scopes . Theres a practicle side to smokeless that mamy dont pursue . This is just one aspect of that thinking  .

Wow i dont my edit so i will try this again . Idont have the walet for a fanvy Nightforce big dollsr scope as many do . But i dont try to shoot big boomer warp speed heavy bullet loads either that just destroy lesser scopes . Theres a pacticlity in this if you cant afford those scopes that can handle horrendius recoil . You just dont chase that type of shooting . That works for me .

What is the typical load you like to shoot and at what velocity? For myself I consider a medium load as a 300 grain .45 at 2600 fps., but realize not everyone considers a medium load the same thing. Heard some guys call that a light load and others call it heavy. I like the Leupold Mark 4 scopes. Excellent at low light levels and reasonably priced if you catch them on sale. I’ve gotten several on sale at Midway, but right now Midway shows them as discontinued. When I was younger Tasco was about all I could afford. Boscovs sold them in a plastic wrap for about $50. They usually only lasted a few years. When I could afford an upgrade went with Leupold and have found them to be a very good scope for the price. I’ve shot other guys Swarovskis and Nightforces, really nice glass, a little better than Leupold, but I’ve found Leupold plenty good for low light hunting.

Medium load is i suppose a good name for them . Although my 45s velocity is under 2600 with 62gr H4198 and a 300 aeromax . This is what it shoots best . Its a barrel nut 700 so i couldnt even if i wanted to push the 300 faster . But honestly its plenty . I entertain no desires for more than that from it . It wears that Vortex 4×16 x40 and isnt a carry around rifle at all . It is a beauty on a bench however !

My current project will wear that Hawke WA 30mm 1.5x6x44 with 84 ft FOV .  . Its a switch rig 54, 50 , 416  700ML . Only the 416  , 1 in 14 Wilson barrel is for smokeless with a Woodman Arms  adjustable 209 , bushing bp . Woodman claims that plug will work up to 60k psi with 209s and .004″ crush fit .  I wont push it that hard . Smooth sized .410 210gr Furys around 260O to 2700 maybe faster  should be a easy 350++ yd very manageable recoil load from a 8 lb — scoped rifle with a 408/416 #5.5 sporter 26 inch barrel shooting flat as a pancake and burning CLEAN  .  That should be a pretty sexy woods , stalking , smaller open area rifle easily encompassing over 90% of whats truly needed to hunt with in most aeas . Just point and shoot . Balanced on the recoil lug it will handle like a Ferrari . Lighter annealed  copper monos under 200gr will also be tried . Bullets as heavy as 250s or more jacketed are available in .410 too and i also have 280 , 330 , and 400 gr conicals from my 410 White Super 91 that will work with bh209 if id like . A 250 gr jacketed is just under 2400 with only 84grW of bh209 and the abiity for easily more .  This will be a versitile inexpensive rig when done . Stainless and in a handsome curly tiger striped walnut skip-line checkered 700 adl stock . “Nostalgia”  will be a  unique muzzleloader able to hunt most anywhere and most anything with 3 calibers to choose from . A cheat sheet will put each barrel deadly close when switched in under 10 minutes  . I will like this one Alot !!!

The GPO scopes i mentioned id like to put on a 40 that my parts pile needs modified . I have a Remington 40x action single shot but want a Defiance AnTi . The barrel is a Brux #6 with a 5 inch shank . I intend that to go back to Brux to be recontoured from a 1.246 shank to a 1.200 . Id also like the barrel reduced from 1 inch /.750 muzzle to .925/.725 muzzle . 10.5 lbs scoped is a bit more than im after .  I want a further more powerfull punch and reach than the 700ml with a 416 is capable of but i dont want the weight . The action is expensive however !!!  I want the ability of 275gr max to shoot 2900 to 3000 in a light package to use those GPO scopes more fully . I know this does contradict what ive previously said .  This ones the hot rod and will also have a powder chamber . Thats the plan anyway . Id also like to recontour the 45s barrel from a #17 to a #6 .  Theres really no acurracy loss and why carry the weight ?? Im not getting any younger .

My “Prefered scope”;

Wellll I can’t even come close to affording the kind of optics I want. It seems that in my learning from many yrs of using El Cheapo optics to learning about what real quality optics are & what they bring to the table vs 200-300.00 optics, I developed a champagne & caviar taste on a beer & slimjims budget.

As to ” favorites “, I do not & never have had a fav brand or specific scope, I’m more apt to have a fav for hunting, another fav for target shooting and another for another application.

I tend to prefer a SFP with excellent low light capabilities & a nice wide low end FOV for my hunting purposes.

Sideshow turned me on to GPO scopes a cpl yrs ago, I’ve seen nothing that compares to their quality, incredibly wide low end FOV, adjustability & low light capabilities even close to their price range. I’m beyond impressed with them, especially their Spectra 6 series & the Passion series. I want one really badly. Meopta is another awesome SFP hunting scope with quality & features beyond its cost.

I decided to get a Trijicon Credo 2.5-15×42 IRMOA scope for my .40 Omega SML which I just got word last Fri that I should have that back pretty soon. I think that will be a fantastic hunting scope on that gun.

I’ve been a big Shepherd scope fan for a cpl decades, had 3 of them. They bring quality & a lot of high end bells & whistles to the table for their price range too. Never an issue with either of them.

I just put a new Athlon Helos BTR Gen2 2-12×42 on my .45 Accura V2 & boy oh boy am I ever impressed & loving this scope, its overall quality & the much higher end features it has – for a very budget friendly price. I can see owning more than one of these scopes, seriously.

As to bench rest target scopes, I can’t afford what I want, but there are numerous 1000.00-2000.00ish FFP MOA scopes avail that I really like. I got a decent deal on the Vortex VIper Gen2 5-25×50 FFP IRMOA that I put on my Paramount. I could point out some things that – for what it costs normally, it should have more features & better quality, but its pretty good for what I’m using it for & what I could afford. Would I replace it if money were not an issue – yes, absolutely!

Been shooting a converted pair amount for about a year now Woodman arms did it for me Mark at Woodman arms if anyone else is looking, I’m a big Paramount fan in spite of the issues a lot of people have had with bullets and board dimensions I had those problems with my gun and that’s why I chose to be Barrel it very happy with it and the results and 18 twist brux,, was I able to get a number 17 Contour down into the factory stock with a little work I have since then put a new stock on the rifle a lot more to say maybe it’s time goes on.

Well thats a pretty hot load alright in a 40 !!! A bit hotter than i desire .

It is, but I checked with Ken at Brux Barrel and Kyle Pittman ran the Quickloads calculation on it. It’s a right stout recoil, even with a muzzle brake, but manageable and safe in my rifle.

Yes a QuickLoads program is a Requirement for the 40 if you intend to stay healthy lol . In fact its difficult to keep lighter bullet loads in the 49 to 53 Kpsi areas with some faster powders and light bullets . Thats what Hankins brass moduals will handle usually . The Alum-bronze ,AB ,hard moduals handle to 62k psi or so . The quick pressure rise of a 40 is both good and bad but definately one to watch out for Very Carefully . The higher pressure is needed for cleaner burning of a powder . Just watch out for the 40s tendacy to suddenly spike with very little more powder .

What i dont like is 300gr and above bullets seem to take massive powder charges to obturate bullets acceptably and truthfully full sizing too . TRUTHFULLY Direct ignition should be used too to help obturation with the long heavier bullets .
Life on the lighter side is just far easier to me all around .

          Sideshow,
Took four months for my website to show up on Google and I used a professional company to register with all the search engines. This site shows up first on Yandex and second on several others. Google is not gun friendly. Site has been up a week. To pronounce it’s not working out is premature. I currently have five websites. All of them took time to climb the search engine rankings. By time I mean months.

Convert a CVA Scout 45/70 to a smokeless .45. Inexpensive way to get into SML and it’s a very accurate gun.

    Hi Tim.

I like the idea of having you convert my Paramount 45 cal to a 40 cal Brux barrel so I can use VVN120 and a Fury 225gr Black tip. I want a 400 yd capable rifle that shoots incredibly good, and doesn’t kick my shoulder to death. I don’t want to use a muzzle brake. This rifle is almost exclusively for deer hunting from tower tree stands in the cold of Wisconsin’s December muzzleloader hunt. I’d like to keep the Paramount stock, and have the barrel match the OEM barrel’s external dimensions as close as possible to minimize cost of stock alterations, but if alterations are necessary, then that’s ok too. The barrel should match the color of the Paramount/Bergara barrel, or maybe a matte silver, but not be a shiny, high gloss finish, I’ll keep my Leupold VariXIII, 6 x 20 x 42 on it.

What twist is best for the 225 grain, .402 Fury? 1:14? Do you think I’m wrong wanting the lighter weight Fury? If so what do you recommend?

I’ll need you to help me order the Brux barrel.

    Thanks.

      customguns

I’ll defer to Mountain Monkey, Ninering62 or one of the other guys on best rate of twist on a light bullet. I only shoot heavier bullets, 350 grain in the .40. I like the high ballistic coefficient and energy dump the heavier bullets deliver. Where I hunt if the deer or bear doesn’t drop in its tracks, I may never find it. It’s always been my understanding the quicker rate of twist is for heavier bullets. My .40 has a 1 in 14 twist rate and I get .25” groups at 100 yards using 350 grain bullets.

    2. Sideshow Avatar
      Sideshow

That 1 in 14 will serve you just fine for a 40 useing light bullets . You also will be fine with a #6 Brux on the gun for shooting considerably heavier loads and bullets . I have that now and will be recontouring to a 1.2 inch shank for a half pound loss with a slightly heavier , .025″ , than a #5 barrel for more weight reduction . I wont venture over the 275gr pittman or hammers with up to 80 gr of H4895 . Thats mid 2900s + velocity . 8lbs scoped braked or not thats gonna kick . 56 to 57gr of 4198 w a 225gr is 2800 fps from a 26in barrel . Less n120 will put you there and easily kill deer to 400yds and more .
Youll want pittman hardcores too so the 228s he calls them . 2550 fps and under for regular pittmans that open up quickly and do massive damage but use the 3gr heavier hardcores for velocitys above that . Especially if youd like a exit wound . Hope this helps ..
