Quote from customguns on 07/19/2023, 09:12Lighter bullet is not necessarily the flatter trajectory. Many heavier bullets have the much higher ballistic coefficients. Heavier bullets also tend to deliver more energy to whatever is being hunted. Where I hunt a bullet that drops an animal where it stands is preferable to one that leaves a blood trail. If I have to trail a deer, there’s a good chance coyotes, bear or mountain lion will find it first.

Quote from Ninering62 on 07/19/2023, 10:41I understand the ballistics of this, I understand what BC brings to the table. I too am almost guaranteed that I’ll never see a deer again that makes it out of sight. I mostly take neck or head shots – DRT. On a running deer I will try to put one in a high shoulder shot – DRT, IF, my shot placement is where it needs to be. I surely know that that isn’t always the case – things don’t go as planned. IE; shots are off a little bit from a wrong range, wind or your lead estimation can happen if your bullet isn’t carrying enough ke to knock your game down regardless of pretty much wherever you hit it is where heavier bullets pay off big. I look for a bullet that will give me a really good energy dump with a pass thru, & I do like a fast, flat shooting bullet too. It really slims down the choices. I honestly believe that with a good 250g-275g bullet at even 2600fps is more than enough ke at extended range to effectively put down any animal in N/A. From a hunting perspective, I am glad I have experienced hunting with both heavy slow moving lead & tiny bullets at blistering velocities & what they do when they hit an animal. I enjoy the effects of both honestly. Both are amazing to watch happen. I have a 500yd target sidelock that I will be sending 465g & 515g bullets downrange with soon. Those will be, by far ( besides 12ga slugs ) the heaviest bullets that I’ve ever shot. Learning to LOB them in at 400yds should be fun.
I do still have some Parker 310g Match Hunter hollow base bullets that I can knurl up & see what happens. Its a nice bullet.

Quote from customguns on 07/19/2023, 12:31I like high shoulder shots, usually lights out, even with light bullets. With the heavy bullets I can take a deer from almost any angle, even a hindquarters shot will enter the chest cavity. I guess to each his own. When I was younger I liked light faster bullets, older I get the heavier the bullet I like. Getting too old to track deer up and down the mountain.

What he said. And – NO, no novice should never even think about messing with anything like this. That bit of info IMHO should have never been posted in any open forum for obvious reasons.

Oh yessir, the heavy bullets from any angle hit like a truck. I went thru a learning & experimenting stages from the time I was a kid to now at almost 61. I’ve literally LMFAO every single time I hit a deer with a Rem .35 200gRN bullet. Body slam after body slam. I hunted for many yrs with 12ga slugs. Then 30-30 & .35 even a .308 Win lever action. Then I got into high power rifles from 30-06 to Rem 7mm Mag & 300 Win mag for a brief period. Nowadays, its muzzleloaders only for me. So I like to create equal or damn close to equal ballistics in my ML’s as I would get in the CF I was hunting with. Why the hell not right. I absolutely love what modern muzzleloading has evolved into. Its beyond my wildest dreams ( and thats really sayin somethin ) I now wish I had gotten into learning about reloading when I was young. I’m really enjoying the learning curve of it all now this late in life. Sometimes it feels abit overwhelming at the realization of the magnitude of just how much I still do not know. I’ve been on a mad learning spree this last yr about powders & pressures & bullets & ballistics & barrel twist rates. Totally enthralled with it all. Then hitting my range & making what I want to do work for me. Hell yeah man, to each his own. Absolutely!

Also it will definately show some temp sensitivity if your Not in its pressure operateing sweet spot loseing fps but its not really insensitive either . 4198 is more insensitive i think . Its a fantastically clean burning powder though and usually more fps than 4198 . With a saboted 40 in a 45 its a beauty with a wool wad under it !!! Im looking forward to testing it in the light bullet 416 build when done .
“N120 will kinda spike quickly if its pushed in the pressure curve”
can someone explain this to me please ? .
