N120
Quote from customguns on 07/12/2023, 08:06Any experiences using N120? Use H4198 and IMR4198 quite often, but have acquired 8 lbs of N120 I’d like to use. Anyone have charge equivalents to IMR or H? Any velocity changes in colder temperatures?

Quote from mnt_monkey on 07/13/2023, 09:01I have not used n120, I plan on it myself though it has a good reputation similar to 4198 just from everyone’s comments I think it’s even a little bit cleaner and more efficient than 4198

Quote from Sideshow on 07/13/2023, 09:51N120 will kinda spike quickly if its pushed in the pressure curve . Also it will definately show some temp sensitivity if your Not in its pressure operateing sweet spot loseing fps but its not really insensitive either . 4198 is more insensitive i think . Its a fantastically clean burning powder though and usually more fps than 4198 . With a saboted 40 in a 45 its a beauty with a wool wad under it !!! Im looking forward to testing it in the light bullet 416 build when done .

Quote from customguns on 07/13/2023, 10:04If I normally shoot 72 grains, measured by weight, of H 4198 pushing a 300 grain bullet in .45, what would be the safe equivalent in N120?

Quote from Sideshow on 07/13/2023, 11:05NO !!! I truthfully cant speak for bore riding with pure N120 but from what ive gathered the charge will drop by at least 10% . Velocity is some higher than 4198 . It doesnt seem to be used with heavier bullets like a 300 either from what ive gathered . I havent ran it on Quickloads or Gordons Reloading Tool site free online . As a saboted load a 200gr bullet with 60gr N120 over a wool wad is 2800 on the nose and extremely accurate !!! Duplexed 25gr N120/84grW bh209 and a 275gr bullet bore riding is 2600 fps with fairly low pressure by smokless standards and also a tack driver . Pretty lucky find to come up with 8 lbs !!! All the Vitivhouri powders are said to be very clean in a SML . That sabot load is a Awesome load with a 195 Barnes MZ or id bet the solid copper heavier one of the two 40s Woodman Arms is making now . This is the best i know to tell you .

Quote from Ninering62 on 07/18/2023, 16:56I’ve been shooting N120 for the past 3yrs or so. That duplex charge Sideshow thought to post in an open forum, he helped me develop when I had zero exp with any smokeless powders. It acted like a shot of NOS to the BH209 & ES was single digit but like he also stated, it will spike on ya real quick. I’m in north Fl so I’ve not shot with it in anything close to extreme cold, but it hasn’t shown to be temp to wide swings from early morn to mid-day or humidity sensitive. I to have read numerous times that in comparison to H4198 its very close, but to start with 10% less with N120 to H4198 & ladder test up from there.
We’ve pulled my brake & pushed some 250g .40 Fury bullets in sabots with N120 too & found a sweet spot at 58g which literally stacked 3 in one nice neat hole with very thight cloverleafs both slightly below & above that weight.
I have a bunch of tubes of N120 loaded up right now from 62g-66g. I shot a group with 62g but my cheap POS chrony started acting up & either not reading or giving me readings so far off that it was more than obvious something was wrong. I’ll share my findings when I run those tubes, if the chrony gremlins don’t wreak havoc again. I have no real need to go buy any H4198 as long as I have N120 around.

Quote from Ninering62 on 07/19/2023, 06:06I’ve had no reason or need to use 300g bullets. I like pushing velocity & a flatter trajectory & a lighter recoil, so the 275g bullets I shoot in my Paramount are the heaviest bullets that I shoot out of my .45’s. I’ve always been of a mind that I’d much rather shoot a 200g-225g bullet at 2600-2800fps vs a 350g-400g bullets at 2000fps.

With the recommendation of starting at 10% less with N120 than H4198 that would put your recommended starting point of 64.8g N120
