Quote from customguns on 06/25/2023, 07:30Number one reason I’ve had guys tell me they’re converting to smokeless is the cost and scarcity of Blackhorn209. How about H4198? I haven’t seen it anywhere since last year.

Quote from Sideshow on 06/26/2023, 03:10Not really for 4198 either . This is another reason why Quickloads is so important. Without a pressure prediction we are living dangerously to try powders we CAN find . Quickloads can keep us safe .

Quote from Ninering62 on 06/28/2023, 10:10Yes, BH 209 is avail now at various places, but they want – one or both testicles, your first-born male & your 401k for an 8oz bottle. Its now selling for anywhere from 80.00-96.00 per 8oz. Now I feel kinda silly for bitching about the price of a 5lb jug @ 234.00 3 yrs ago bc 5lb jugs are EXTINCT now, along with the previous 10oz bottles for 36.88 per.
When what I have on hand is gone, unless they are practically giving it away & begging us to buy it again, I’ve bought my last bottle of it….. as much as I do like it & absolutely loved using it.
That said, I am really glad that this current situation with BH 209 availability & insane cost has forced me to seek other more practical & affordable solutions to get my trigger therapy in.
So I developed a duplex load with BH 209 3 yrs ago that has been fantastic. Its allowed me to cut way back on my BH 209 charges & give it a lil shot of NOS to get the ballistics I want – SAFELY.
I’ve now however moved to 100% smokeless powders at 42-52.00 per lb & completely freed myself from that BH 209 monopoly stranglehold.

Quote from ivn on 07/06/2023, 11:03Grafs has had H4198 recently (like a week ago or so). They’ve also had no-hazmat-shipping on $150+ orders… most recent one expired yesterday…

Quote from customguns on 07/06/2023, 11:34Thanks for the heads up. Just went to Grafs to buy some H4198 and they’re sold out already. Nice to know it’s still in production though.

Quote from Decay on 07/07/2023, 15:12Scheels has Blackhorn 209 for $84.39 for the 8oz bottle. I just saw 20 bottles of it and won’t buy it at that price.

Quote from michigan muzzy on 07/07/2023, 19:52I havent seen H4198 in a while but plenty of imr4198 around. Theres a bottle of bh209 @ a nearby LGS, for $52 that i may breakdown and buy. I think going to an older, non bh209 friendly slam fire or sidelock ml is another good option. Plenty of Pyrodex and t7 around but they, too, are getting more expensive. Some forums wont let you discuss making your own real black. Would that be allowed here? I think that as a modern muzzleloader, it is a skill that could come in handy someday.

Quote from customguns on 07/08/2023, 08:10This is what I found on what the ATF regulations are on making black powder. I’d be very interested on how to make my own, so if anyone would like to post how they make their own, please do so.
Individuals do not need a manufacturer’s license if they manufacture black powder for their own personal, non-business use and the black powder produced is not a “commercial” product within the contemplation of the exemption and must be stored in compliance with the appropriate regulations.
