Another complication with my 2yr ongoing .40 Omega build
Quote from Ninering62 on 07/16/2023, 21:24Originally I ordered a custom contoured Brux barrel for this build, that I didn’t find out until over a yr later that & couldn’t use the shank OD that I wanted to & that my barrel would need to have the 8″ straight shank turned down to 1.10″.
So where this next snafu occurred is bc I orig ordered a set of DNZ Game Reaper 2 piece mounts that with a little machining to the bases, they would mount directly to the barrel, without needing a rail. I really like the clean ” uncluttered ” look of that.
Well later on, I got to thinking that if I ever needed to sell it that having a rail on it would be beneficial & I decided to forgo my orig plan.
So now I have a set of 90.00 scope mounts I can’t do anything with & I’m finding out this past 2 wks of internet searching for a set of DNZ Freedom Reaper 2pc 30mm Med height for a Pic Rail can’t be found anywhere but at DNZ & they cost 152.00. Why the hell I didn’t keep my orig plan & be done with it knowing that I would love how it looked like that is beyond me. Or why I didnt just keep it simple & use a DNZ 1pz mount for the Omegas & have that base machined to fit a 1.1 barrel vs the orig 1″. That would have been much cheaper & simpler to have done. Lots of expensive dumbass rookie ” first build ” bad decisions have been made & much was learned from them too.

But honestly thats only a few passes on a lathe to fix . Strengthwise between a barrel nut Rem @ 1.o62 and the large shank Savage @ 1.15 iirc is where youll end up , not counting the rail holes unfortuneately . Not all bad for up to a fairly warm 250gr or a milder 275gr bullet . Your highly frangible 240ot fury will be fine i suspect @ 2800 but id go no hotter with the right powder . Thats on you if you do not verify that .
Hankins 209 bp is said better than the ASG before pressures are seen in the 209 itself . At what pressure signs occur i dunno . Ive opted for the Woodman adjustable tested to 60k psi before expansion of a 209 right under the rim occurs . Since this will be right by your face it would be a good idea to measure 209s carefully before and after shooting .
The 40 is scary to use bubba tatics with . In a way at least the 209 will blow out a side hopefully before a Far Bigger disaster even if its right by your nose . Sober is a good idea . So is either the pressure prediction program Quickloads or Gordons Reloading Tool . The 40 wont play around with you better heed this advice . No time for bubba crap at all . Hopefully Woodman cuts that inch anyway . A choke isnt needed or wanted . Bad idea . Not all is lost with that 1 piece mount . Honestly it should be epoxy bedded anyway for stability . That the Right Way to do it . Im sure Mark will think of something to use if you balk at this . They can be removed even epoxied on . Fat shank screws is all i can say without a built in stop like a good 700 rail has .
Youre not nearly in as horrible shape as you think . Yep 1.2 wouldve been better but oh well . At least it will be functional . Just Behave .
All in all this non shooting fat guy in some peoples words again sets the real deal down for plain view . This beats a dam cold wind from the north . Trust me . Use wisdom . Nothing less will do .
